Women and Children at Nellie’s Shelter Need Your Support
Nellie’s operates a 40-bed emergency shelter in Toronto and offers multiple programs and services for women and their children who are leaving situations of violence, poverty, and homelessness. As we get closer to another freezing Toronto winter, Nellie’s services are more important than ever.
Who are their clients?
Nellie’s mandate to help ALL women and children, regardless of why they are homeless, is what makes their organization’s work unique. The women who come through their doors at the shelter or access their community support and outreach programs all come with different experiences and needs.
How do their programs and services make a difference?
Women and their children may reside at Nellie’s Shelter for up to a year, or longer if they are dealing with legal or immigration issues. Counsellors assist and advocate for women to access the services and support they need including housing, medical, immigration, employment, and educational services. In addition to advocacy, women receive one-on-one counselling from staff as well as the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of social, recreational, and educational programs.
Nellie’s Transitional Housing Support Program helps women access safe and affordable housing so that they do not return to violent situations. Through this program women are assisted with the application process for subsidized housing as well as with safety planning, crisis support, advocacy, and connections to community resources.
How can you support their mission?
We are proud to raise funds for Nellie’s Shelter through our Culinary Journey contest. You can help support their mission by purchasing a $25 contest entry. Your entry will also give you the chance to win dinner-for-two at eight of Toronto’s finest restaurants. Including one of east-end Toronto’s favourites, Pollyanna.
